IT Home reported on November 1, citing a report published today by technology outlet TechRadar, that finding a job is becoming increasingly difficult. Applicants must contend with initial AI screening and work to make their wording sound more human while also showing appealing qualities.

IT Home learned from the original report that recruitment platform Greenhouse recently surveyed more than 1,100 job seekers in the UK and Ireland. It found that Gen Z job seekers have a deeper understanding of initial AI screening in recruitment than people over 60.

Among those surveyed, 81% of job seekers had been rejected after submitting only a résumé, without any interaction with recruitment staff. Some 97% wanted to show aspects of themselves that could not be included on a résumé, suggesting that recruitment methods in this new era must change.

The most worrying issue, however, remains initial AI screening systems. In the past 12 months, 42% of candidates had taken part in an AI interview, and 57% of them said it gave them an opportunity to demonstrate their skills. Although AI plays an important role in polishing résumés, employers have already found that standardized, AI-polished résumés make it difficult for applicants to stand out.

Greenhouse Chief People Officer Sharawn Tipton said: “For the first time, both sides of the hiring process agree that the current process is broken. Job seekers submit applications that seem to disappear into a void, while employers must select candidates from résumé after résumé polished by AI and looking almost identical. Job seekers need a system that actually works and gives them a fair chance to compete. AI layered on AI only hurts everyone.”
