IT Home reported on October 19 that Anthropic announced on October 18 local time that, subject to shareholder approval, it plans to transfer 5% of its shares to a newly established Public Benefit Fund. IT Home noted that the company, which positions itself as safety-first, frequently emphasizes the risks associated with its AI models. Most recently, in its IPO prospectus, it said the models could exhibit “self-preservation behavior.”
Including the newly established fund, Anthropic will have earmarked approximately 20% of its shares for public purposes in total, excluding any additional shares that may be allocated when future valuation milestones are reached.
Anthropic said it will release more details in the coming months about the fund’s governance, organizational structure, and the valuation thresholds that could increase its ownership stake. The company also plans to publish a public benefit report detailing its progress toward fulfilling its mission.
