IT Home reported on November 7 that US outlets including ABC7 News reported this month on a high-value theft of technology cargo in California: six pallets of Nvidia GPUs and related hardware, worth about $11.4 million (IT Home note: approximately 76.222 million yuan at the current exchange rate), disappeared in transit. Local police have opened an investigation.
Citing a blog post, IT Home said the shipment departed Oakland, California, on August 29 local time and was originally bound for Texas, but was picked up by a truck posing as a vehicle from a food transportation company.
Investigators tracked the truck to San Bernardino County, California, before losing its trail. Oakland police received a theft report on September 13, and no arrests had been announced as of publication.
The case has again drawn attention to the security of shipments of high-value technology products. Reports noted that rising demand and prices for high-end hardware have made GPUs a high-reward target for thieves.
Several media outlets have described the incident as the “world's largest / largest-ever GPU theft.” It is the known theft of an Nvidia single-truck shipment with the highest value: the Nvidia hardware aboard that one truck alone was worth as much as $11.4 million (approximately 76.222 million yuan at the current exchange rate), an exceptionally rare amount in past thefts of electronics or chip shipments.
After tracking the case, freight security organizations such as Verisk CargoNet said it had exactly the same origins as a series of organized crimes targeting AI chips since mid-2026. Since mid-2026, a highly organized criminal group has carried out a series of interstate robberies targeting AI chips and data center equipment across multiple parts of the United States, with the total value involved exceeding $100 million (approximately 669 million yuan at the current exchange rate).
