IT Home reported on November 8 that Tesla plans several major upgrades to the Cybercab, bringing improved energy efficiency and a new body color. Early today (the 8th), Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed on X that the company would make further improvements to the Cybercab. “We will further improve energy efficiency so the Cybercab can use a 40 kWh battery pack. We will also introduce Liquid Silver so the body colors are less monotonous.”
According to IT Home, earlier this week Tesla announced that it would eliminate the Cybertruck production line at its Texas Gigafactory to free up capacity to produce more Cybercabs.
A new, more energy efficient Cybercab is expected to help Tesla increase profitability and profit margins. From a business perspective, it also makes the case for discontinuing Cybertruck production more compelling.
Cybercabs currently operating as Robotaxis in Austin, Texas, are equipped with 48 kWh battery packs. Judging from Musk’s remarks, Tesla hopes to meet the same operational needs with fewer battery cells through technical improvements.
Tesla’s decision to prioritize expanding Cybercab production capacity and discontinue Cybertruck production has sparked considerable controversy among car enthusiasts, with many supporters explicitly expressing dissatisfaction.
Nevertheless, Musk remains committed to the decision. “If we continue to maintain complex production lines and supply chains for the Cybertruck, and devote engineers to it, we cannot use those people, factory space and equipment to expand Cybercab production capacity. Yet the Cybercab will completely transform land transportation!”
Compared with the conventional passenger car market, Tesla now wants to focus more on autonomous driving and change how people travel. To realize this ambitious vision, however, Tesla must make trade-offs, and the Cybertruck has consequently become a casualty.
