Title: "Early career researcher responses to AI in math"
New MIT paper finds that nearly 70% of 268 surveyed early-career mathematicians expect AI to make tenured jobs harder to get.
fear of being scooped by AI is making some young mathematicians share less of their unfinished work.
3 early-career MIT mathematicians surveyed 268 grad students and postdocs from nearly 60 institutions. Responses came in September and early October 2026, mostly before OpenAI released 700+ AI solutions to open problems.
76.3% expect AI to make tenure-track jobs harder to get. Among those who use AI in research, 54.8% say they dislike doing so.
