IT Home reported on October 19, citing an October 18 report by Red Star News, that a video claiming to show a cargo ship catching fire and sinking in the Strait of Hormuz, with iPhones covering the sea, had recently amassed more than 80 million views on social media platforms. However, fact-checking found that the video was fictional content generated by artificial intelligence.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said in a notice issued on October 14 that a Singaporean cargo ship was struck by an unidentified flying object while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on October 13 local time. Its hull was damaged, it caught fire and eventually sank. All 21 crew members evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. Another Singapore-registered container ship, the “GFS Giselle,” was also damaged in the related incident but ultimately reached a safe anchorage under its own power.
A number of videos then began circulating online. Some showed large numbers of phone boxes bearing the Apple phone logo floating on the sea, with crowds gathering onshore and scrambling to pick up goods washed ashore by the waves. Others showed small boats moving across the water as fishermen gathered floating cargo into their boats.
An open-source intelligence investigation team found through reverse searches that several videos purporting to show “Iranian residents salvaging iPhones” originally came from the Instagram account “Nativora.” The account describes its content as fictional nature and wildlife footage made using artificial intelligence. The false videos appeared on that Instagram account on October 16, and the creator explicitly added an “AI Content” label indicating that the content was generated by artificial intelligence.
