IT Home reported on October 28 that Apple released the latest iOS 27.2 on October 26 local time, bringing two new improvements to the iPhone Photos app involving Shared Albums and the ability to identify images generated or edited by AI.
According to a report by 9to5Mac today, users can now edit photo captions and comments in Shared Albums, avoid adding duplicate photos, and receive reminders before albums expire. The system has also added support for SynthID digital watermarks to help identify images created or modified using generative AI.
Shared Albums is a feature for sharing photos and videos in Apple's Photos app. After upgrading to iOS 27.2, users can revise captions on photos and videos they have posted, and can also edit comments.
The system can also help users avoid adding the same photo to an album more than once and display a reminder when a Shared Album is about to expire, giving participants a chance to save its photos and videos in advance. To use these features, Shared Albums must be upgraded to the version for iOS 27.
Another update adds support for SynthID watermarks to help determine whether an image was created or modified by generative tools. SynthID is a digital watermarking technology developed by Google that embeds markers, usually imperceptible to the human eye, in AI-generated or edited content. Users will not see a visible watermark in the traditional sense, but can use detection tools that support the technology to check whether an image contains the markers.
According to Apple's release notes, iOS 27.2 adds SynthID watermark support to the Photos app and Image Playground. However, this does not mean that every edited photo will carry the marker. Apple previously said only that the watermark would cover most images created or edited using Apple Intelligence tools.
