IT Home reported on November 4 that game mod sharing platform Nexus Mods has announced an update to its policy on the use of generative AI, requiring creators to disclose specifically how AI tools were used in making their mods. The platform also made clear that it will not impose a blanket ban on AI mods. It aims to establish new rules to balance the differing views of users in the community.
Under the new rules, creators who use AI tools in making mods must explain in detail which parts of their mods involved AI, so other users can review that information before downloading and decide for themselves whether to accept it.
Creators of mods that have already been published will have a 60-day grace period to add the required information. Subsequent reviews will be conducted by people. Nexus Mods also encourages users to report mods that fail to disclose AI use as required.
Foledinho, who heads the Nexus Mods website, stressed that the basic principle behind all the platform's related decisions is to “support human creation,” and that it therefore will not ban all AI mods outright.
Foledinho also said that AI-generated mods can still be published on Nexus Mods as long as they meet the platform's requirements concerning permissions, transparency, how content is presented, and user behavior. Foledinho acknowledged that the new policy may not meet every community member's expectations. The platform will adjust its policies as AI technology continues to develop.
