IT Home reported on October 21 that, at a OneDrive and Copilot event held yesterday (October 20), Microsoft announced that it was raising OneDrive’s sync limit from 300,000 to a maximum of 1 million items, an increase of 233.33%.
Microsoft has raised OneDrive’s sync limit to a maximum of 1 million items, substantially easing the previous restriction on the number of files and folders that can be synced. For businesses, schools and organizations managing vast numbers of documents, the new limit may reduce the need to split up file libraries or move storage locations.
However, 300,000 items remains Microsoft’s recommended threshold for better performance; exceeding it may cause slower syncing and other performance issues.
In addition to sync capacity, Microsoft has addressed the long-standing problem of file paths being too long. Administrators can now customize the OneDrive folder name to shorten the overall path length.
For file management, OneDrive has added a dedicated “Shortcuts” folder. Users can keep shortcuts in one place, preventing them from being mixed with actual folders in the root of “My Files.”
To help IT administrators monitor, troubleshoot and automate the management of OneDrive sync deployments across their organizations more efficiently, Microsoft has also introduced a OneDrive Sync Client command-line interface (CLI). The tool is currently available in preview under the odsync command; a general release date has not yet been announced.
Previously, administrators could see which devices were running normally or failed to meet compliance requirements, but pinpointing sync failures often still required manually checking devices one by one. The new CLI aims to make this process command-driven: administrators can obtain real-time status through a terminal and script common checks and fixes for batch execution, reducing repetitive work. IT Home has included the relevant screenshots below:
Based on the features Microsoft demonstrated, the OneDrive Sync CLI can show the OneDrive accounts configured on a device, the client and CLI versions, folder backup settings, applied policies, and the overall status of the client, accounts and folder backups. It also supports handling multiple configured accounts at once and narrowing queries to a specific account.
