IT Home reported on October 17 that Microsoft published a blog post yesterday (October 15) announcing that it had partnered with Carnegie Mellon University to launch PRAISE, an “AI-Accelerated Software Engineering Mentorship” program intended to preserve the pipeline of future senior engineers while AI accelerates development.

When AI can generate code, participate in architectural design, and fix defects in seconds, is there still room for junior programmers to grow? Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University's answer is yes, but the way they are trained must be redesigned.

Citing the blog post, IT Home said PRAISE draws on the nursing profession's “clinical preceptorship” model: early-career junior engineers are paired with senior engineers, who guide them in understanding systems, testing assumptions, deciding when to use AI, and taking responsibility for the final outcome. The program emphasizes that the goal is not for newcomers to “pretend AI does not exist” and keep writing code by hand; more important is developing systems thinking, engineering taste, judgment, and a sense of responsibility.

Microsoft believes AI changes the nature of the work but does not remove human responsibility for software quality and safety. As more time shifts toward design, architecture, and verification, engineers still need to understand how the underlying code works; otherwise, teams will struggle to diagnose and fix problems when systems fail.

Carnegie Mellon University will provide formal courses and small-group seminars for the program to help participants connect computer science theory with real-world, production-grade software delivery. Michael Hilton, a faculty member at the university, said junior engineers used to build expertise through a large volume of basic tasks, and academia and industry now need to design new paths for their development together.
