IT Home reported on November 7 that Blackmagic Design released the DaVinci Resolve 21.2 update yesterday (November 6), along with an update to DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.2 (the paid version), bringing touch support and other improvements to editing, color grading, and visual effects workflows.
DaVinci Resolve is professional video post-production software developed by Blackmagic Design. It combines editing, color grading, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post-production, and photo processing in one application, and is often used to produce short films, advertisements, documentaries, movies, and content for independent media creators.
Citing a blog post, IT Home said the most noteworthy improvement in this update is native support for Apple's first touchscreen MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display. Creators can use their fingers to scroll through the timeline, drag and drop media, add effects and subtitles, and zoom in and out in the viewer, making editing and color grading on the go closer to an experience that works right away.
On performance, Blackmagic says the new version can render effects up to 5 times faster on devices equipped with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. For video teams that regularly work with high-resolution footage, complex composites, and numerous color-grading nodes, this optimization could significantly reduce waits for exports and previews.
For color workflows, DaVinci Resolve 21.2 adds support for Blackmagic Generation 6 Color Science LUTs and film looks. ResolveFX False Color is now compatible with both Gen 5 and Gen 6 color science, helping users maintain a more consistent image across footage from different cameras and color-grading workflows.
For editing, multicam clips can now be opened as source clips in the source timeline; extracted audio files retain source timecode; and compound clips and PNG EXIF metadata have also been improved. The software also fixes numerous issues involving audio, AAF, OGraf, H.265, and XDCAM media, and includes more than 25 stability and performance fixes.
Studio users will also get more capable AI assistant features, including expanded capabilities for color grading and Fusion operations, as well as improvements to the scripting API. The AI assistant can handle more frame- and thumbnail-related tasks, helping creators reduce repetitive work.
DaVinci Resolve 21.2 is now available as a free download from the Blackmagic Design support center. DaVinci Resolve Studio remains available under a one-time purchase license for $239.99 (IT Home note: approximately 1,605 yuan at current exchange rates).
