IT Home reported on November 2 that IDC (International Data Corporation) released 250 annual FutureScape 2027 predictions across 25 research areas last week.
The firm said that by 2028, enterprises will run 60% of their AI workloads on open-source models and use model-routing strategies to reduce costs and hedge against vendor lock-in. Enterprises that move faster will be the first to address cost overruns for AI agent inference.
Among Global 2000 (G2000) companies, 60% will run most of their business processes AI-first by 2029, compared with just 13% today; by 2028, 70% of these companies will have the ability to continuously validate AI agents' decisions.
By 2028, G2000 companies that fail to establish emergency stop switches for agents in production environments will face 25% higher liability insurance premiums and twice the exposure to major audit findings. By 2028, 75% of G2000 companies will include clauses assigning responsibility for agents' autonomous behavior in technology supply contracts.
On employment, by 2029, G2000 companies will shift 30% of entry-level and mid-level execution roles toward roles involving the supervision and orchestration of AI agents. Among midmarket companies with 1,000 to 4,999 employees, about half expect their number of entry-level employees to increase over the next 18 months, while only 17% expect it to decrease.
