IT Home reported on October 31 that Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's head of core products and platforms, posted on X today (October 31) to announce that ChatGPT account switching is now available on the web, iOS and Android, with a desktop release planned soon.
Sottiaux also previewed that there would be reset cards on each of the next two days.
Citing OpenAI's official changelog, IT Home reported that users can stay signed in to up to two accounts at once and switch between them quickly without signing out, although only one account can be active at a time.
For users who use both personal and company accounts, this update addresses a longstanding frustration with switching logins. Previously, switching between personal and work agent accounts often required repeatedly signing out and back in; now users can switch between the two accounts through the account menu or “Settings — Switch accounts.”
OpenAI emphasized that after an account switch, chat history, memories, files and settings reflect the selected account, and each workspace belongs only to its corresponding account. Conversation history, uploaded files and memories are not shared between accounts, nor are billing, subscriptions or workspaces merged.
However, switching accounts does not move chat history from one account to another; users who want to use paid features on a new account must subscribe separately.
As for usage rules, users can have more than two ChatGPT accounts, but can be signed in to no more than two at once on the same device. If two accounts are already signed in, one must be signed out before a new account can be added; creating a second account is free, and a new account defaults to the free plan.
The mobile app also supports receiving notifications based on each account's settings and the device's permissions. When users tap a notification for another account, the app switches to that account and opens the relevant content, making it easier to handle messages for different identities promptly.
