IT Home reported on November 8 that on November 5, 2026, Sony (China) Limited (“Sony”) gave the global debut of its “in-vehicle passenger motion sickness detection using two streams of visual information” technology at the 9th China International Import Expo, focusing on motion sickness experienced while watching videos during car rides.

According to the introduction, Sony’s exploration of mobility extends from drivers to passengers and to the experience of in-car entertainment. At the 8th China International Import Expo, Sony showcased an in-car entertainment experience combining its “Window of Inspiration,” in-vehicle audio, PS5 games and other resources. In response to visitors’ feedback about feeling motion sick when watching screens in moving vehicles, Sony China Research Institute developed an in-vehicle passenger motion sickness detection solution this year and collaborated with Beijing Jiaotong University to further address ride comfort during in-car entertainment.

The solution analyzes two video streams simultaneously: one shows the road ahead and reflects vehicle conditions such as acceleration, deceleration, turns and bumps; the other shows the content playing on a rear-seat screen and identifies visual factors that may cause motion sickness, such as overall motion, rotation and flickering. An AI model trained on publicly available medical data combines the two streams of information to predict how severe a passenger’s motion sickness might be, and can also factor in individual sensitivity.

IT Home learned from the official introduction that the assessment results can be used to prompt drivers to avoid sudden braking and sharp turns, and can also inform content platforms’ recommendations of content with gentler visual changes. The solution reuses the vehicle’s existing forward-facing ADAS camera, requires no additional rear-seat camera, and the related technology has been submitted for patent protection.
