ITHome reported on October 29 that Tencent and Visa announced today that they had signed a memorandum of understanding to explore broader cooperation and improve the global payments and commerce experience across Tencent’s ecosystem.
Building on their existing cooperation in serving international visitors to China, Tencent and Visa will further improve the cross-border payment experience for inbound and outbound travelers through Tencent’s cross-border payment platform TenPay Global and Visa Pay. The two companies will work to develop solutions that, subject to regulatory requirements, enable travelers to make convenient cross-border payments at participating merchants covered by WeChat Pay and the Visa network. They also plan to deepen their cooperation in cross-border remittances through Visa Direct, making it easier for more senders overseas to transfer funds into the WeChat Pay ecosystem.
Tencent Cloud and Visa will also explore opportunities for cooperation where enterprise AI, agentic commerce, developer ecosystems and the globalization of Chinese companies intersect, combining Tencent Cloud’s AI, cloud and data capabilities with Visa’s global network and product solutions.
According to the official statement, Tencent’s international payment platform Midas and Visa have deepened their cooperation in joint marketing, payment experience and risk management, building on their longstanding, solid relationship in gaming. This cooperation has now expanded to Tencent’s overseas AI business, with the aim of improving the payment experience in AI scenarios and exploring opportunities related to payments by AI agents.
ITHome has learned that Tencent and Visa plan to jointly explore next-generation agentic payments, including studying how Visa Intelligent Commerce could enable AI agents to help eligible users discover, select and purchase goods or services, creating a secure payment experience that users control themselves. The two companies will also cooperate on payment experiences for developer agents and emerging AI-native commerce models.
