IT Home reported on October 29 that Bloomberg published an article today (October 29) saying that U.S. semiconductor company Marvell plans to acquire Lumentum, a maker of optical communications equipment for data centers. The two sides are currently in talks, and the deal could be announced as early as next week.
Citing the article, IT Home said the two sides have yet to reach a final agreement. If completed, the deal could become a major acquisition in the AI hardware supply chain.
In terms of size, Lumentum currently has a market capitalization of about $83 billion (IT Home note: about 554.526 billion yuan at current exchange rates), while Marvell has a market capitalization of about $221 billion (about 1.48 trillion yuan at current exchange rates). Bloomberg said the potential deal highlights how the AI race is pushing technology companies to expand more quickly through acquisitions and secure optical communications and data center interconnection resources.
Lumentum mainly makes lasers and optical communications components used to transmit vast amounts of data at high speed between data centers, telecommunications networks, and servers. As AI clusters expand rapidly, high-speed optical interconnections are becoming key infrastructure for computing efficiency.
The report said that if the deal goes through, Marvell would more closely integrate its chip design capabilities with Lumentum's optical modules, lasers, and optical interconnection technology, helping it strengthen its AI data center product lineup and simplify parts of its supply chain.
The market reacted sharply to the news. Lumentum shares rose about 17% at one point in after-hours U.S. trading before paring their gains, while Marvell Technology shares fell about 8% after hours. Bloomberg said investors see the long-term strategic value of AI optical interconnections but are also concerned about the financing pressure, equity dilution, and integration risks that a large acquisition could bring.
