IT Home reported on October 10 that The Wall Street Journal said in a report published yesterday local time that Meta has shelved plans to rent AI computing capacity to Anthropic.
The report said that earlier this year, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei personally called Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, hoping to rent AI computing chips from the competitor. Meta discussed the matter internally and ultimately decided not to provide them for the time being.
As its self-developed Muse series of models is gradually released, Meta's AI business has quickly recovered from an earlier slump, and its own demand for computing capacity has also grown rapidly. Choosing to sell computing capacity to Anthropic at this point could be considered “aiding a rival.”
The report noted that the allocation of computing resources is affecting where AI talent chooses to work. A shortage of computing capacity was among the reasons Noam Shazeer, a key author of the Transformer architecture, left Google for a second time. Meanwhile, many commitments to build computing capacity have ultimately fallen through, limiting the development of the AI industry.
