IT Home, October 29: A Microsoft spokesperson told Business Insider that the company offered a voluntary severance package to more than a quarter of its employees this week, but expects no more than 3,000 people to ultimately accept it.
On the 28th local time, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood reiterated that assessment in an internal memo and addressed employees’ questions about why the package was introduced. “I know some employees do not understand why we are offering a voluntary departure package this week. Our intention is to let employees who want to leave Microsoft decide for themselves how to do so. Given the career development opportunities the company offers, we expect very few people to accept the package.”
The memo was Hood’s quarterly earnings email to employees. When Microsoft releases its quarterly results, she typically updates employees internally on the company’s performance.
Previous emails largely repeated information in the public earnings reports, but because this week’s severance package attracted widespread attention in the technology industry, Hood addressed it specifically.
Earlier this year, Microsoft also introduced another voluntary retirement package. About one-third of eligible employees accepted it, enabling Microsoft to reduce the number of subsequent layoffs.
Microsoft said it does not expect as many people to accept the new package introduced this week.
IT Home provides the full text of the Microsoft CFO’s internal memo below.
Dear colleagues:
This afternoon, we announced our first-quarter financial results. Company revenue grew 19% and operating income grew 21%, both exceeding Wall Street expectations.
As we entered fiscal year 2027, we also made a significant change to how our businesses are categorized in our financial reports. For the first time in 12 years, we changed our business reporting structure, combining the previous 3 business segments into 2: Agents and Infrastructure, and Devices and Consumer. The new structure better reflects how Microsoft actually operates, from product development and resource allocation to how coordination across the layers of our platform creates value for customers. Calculated retrospectively under the new structure, Agents and Infrastructure contributed about 81% of revenue in the previous fiscal year, while Devices and Consumer accounted for 19%.
Here are some performance highlights from the 2 business segments this quarter:
Agents and Infrastructure revenue grew 23%.
Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $63.9 billion (IT Home note: approximately 426.919 billion yuan at the current exchange rate), with growth accelerating to 30%. Within that, Azure revenue grew 48%, and demand for Foundry accelerated.
On a constant-currency basis, Microsoft 365 Commercial Cloud revenue grew 18%, driven primarily by premium subscription products such as Copilot and E7, as well as growth in usage-based service revenue from Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot.
Microsoft 365 commercial subscription seats grew 5%. The number of customers with more than 50,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot seats reached 8 times the level of the same period last year.
Microsoft 365 Consumer Cloud revenue grew 17%, and the number of subscribers grew 7%.
Industry Solutions cloud revenue grew 10%, with growth in both Dynamics 365 and LinkedIn Talent Solutions.
Devices and Consumer revenue declined 3%.
Search and advertising revenue, excluding traffic acquisition costs, grew 12%, with growth across LinkedIn, Bing and Edge.
Windows OEM and Devices revenue declined 22%, affected by the favorable effect last year from the end of support for Windows 10, inventory reductions by OEM partners, and weak demand in the PC market. Xbox Content and Services revenue declined 2%. Last week, we launched Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, continuing to make great games available to more players across more devices.
Thank you for your hard work, which has given the new fiscal year a strong start. I want to thank the engineering and infrastructure delivery teams in particular. They have worked to accelerate resource delivery while ensuring high reliability. The teams are also improving the efficiency of our existing resources so that we can better meet customer demand for the Azure platform. Demand in this area continues to exceed our capacity to supply it.
I know some employees do not understand why we are offering a voluntary departure package this week. Our intention is to let employees who want to leave Microsoft decide for themselves how to do so. Given the career development opportunities the company offers, we expect very few people to accept the package. We will also continue to offer employees a range of learning and development opportunities to help everyone acquire new skills and advance their careers at Microsoft.
Looking ahead, we have tremendous opportunities for growth. To seize them, we will focus on building excellent products and solutions that help customers achieve their goals in security, innovation, growth and other areas. Thank you for always putting positive outcomes and tangible value for customers first.
If you would like to learn more about this quarter’s financial results and the outlook for the second quarter, you can watch the livestream today at 2:30 p.m. U.S. Pacific Time, listen to the replay, or read the conference transcript on the investor relations website. Finally, please mark your calendars for Microsoft Ignite, taking place November 17–20. There, we will show how innovations in AI, cloud computing, data, security and Copilot work together to help customers transform their businesses.
Thank you all sincerely!
Amy
