Anthropic analyzed internal employment, AI use and output data and interviewed 17 employees. It reports that since early 2025, junior employees’ share of technical departments fell from 21% to 14%, while junior technical hires’ share fell from 27% to 9%. Output rose after employees adopted coding agents, but reviewing agent output added to the demands on human attention. The study covers Anthropic alone, and tool adoption was not random, so it cannot establish that AI caused all the changes.

About a third of its ML managers and a fifth of its SWE managers said AI had led them to hire less. Another 59% of staff said AI already cuts the time spent on suitable tasks to a quarter.

Anthropic says that by August 2026, interactive AI agents deployed by employees logged six times as many work hours as human employees. The share of technical hires for junior roles fell from 27% in early 2025 to 9%, while the company continued to expand overall, with faster growth in sales, finance and recruiting roles.
