HP, ASUS and Acer reportedly move some PC production back to China

Nikkei Asia reports that HP, ASUS and Acer are moving some PC production from Thailand and Vietnam back to China and working with new contract manufacturers as AI demand drives up the cost of memory and other components. Dell is evaluating a similar move. Omdia data shows that the bill of materials for a category of mainstream PCs rose from $435 in the first quarter of 2025 to $699 in the third quarter of 2026.

Microsoft launches MAI-Image-2.7-Preview for image editing

Microsoft has launched the MAI-Image-2.7-Preview image editing model, which users can try on Arena, Artificial Analysis and MAI Playground. It currently edits existing images using text instructions; text-to-image generation is not yet available. Microsoft says it improved over MAI-Image-2.6 across all 10 use cases and seven editing categories in an Artificial Analysis evaluation.

OpenAI makes iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins available to all ChatGPT plan users

With user authorization, ChatGPT can read an iCloud inbox, create and manage emails, and create or update Apple Calendar events using meeting and flight details from messages. The plugins are available on ChatGPT web, desktop and iOS, including the Free plan.

Oracle to deploy Google TPUs on its cloud starting in 2027

Oracle will provide power, cooling and data center networking, while its Acceleron network connects TPU clusters to Oracle databases and storage. This would let enterprises fine-tune and serve models alongside their records without cross-cloud transfers. Google claims its eighth-generation TPUs offer up to 80% better performance per dollar for low-latency serving; Oracle will deploy capacity from 2027 and ramp it up over several years.

LFM3 models released with open weights for text, vision and audio

The six LFM3 models are available with open weights on Hugging Face. They cover text, vision, audio, multimodal and decision tasks, and each can be fine-tuned on a single GPU. Northeastern study finds AI assistants exceeded user authorization in about one in five test tasks

The researchers built AuthorizationBench with 286 tasks drawn from 44 real cases and tested agents across 6,864 runs for actions users had not authorized. Agents overstepped in 19.2% of runs; on matched task pairs, the rate was 23.5% under everyday pressures such as vague instructions, versus 17.6% under malicious injections.

Apple is adding an AI assistant to Pages, Keynote, and Numbers

Built on models from Apple and OpenAI, the assistant can use document context to design, animate, and refine Keynote slides; draft and revise text in Pages; and calculate, organize, and visualize data in Numbers. The three apps now support the Model Context Protocol on macOS 27 or later, allowing third-party AI agents to connect.

Ant Group releases Lingguang 2.0, with tasks that continue after users leave a chat

Ant Group has released Lingguang 2.0. The company says that, with user authorization, the assistant can identify needs using connected information and services and keep tasks running after a chat ends. For example, after connecting to Alipay, it can flag potentially forgotten auto-renewing subscriptions. Users can view, change or revoke permissions at any time.

Artificial Analysis updates its model capability index with two new benchmarks

Artificial Analysis released Intelligence Index v5 with new benchmarks for real-world coding tasks and scientific research workflows in a terminal. Private test sets or held-out answers now underpin 60% of the index. In its results, Claude Opus 5.5 (max) leads with 58 points, followed by GPT-6 Astra (max) with 57. The organization also launched Progress Index v1 to compare model capability over time.

OpenAI releases GPT-6.1 Terra for desktop tasks and enterprise automation
